The Cabildo grants six future designers scholarships for internships at the Gran Canaria Moda Cálida workshops

2018-02-06

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has awarded scholarships to six future designers. The scholarship entitles them to six-month paid internships in the workshops of the creators of Moda Cálida, where they will benefit from the experience and extensive knowledge of talented well-established designers.

The Councillor for Industry, Minerva Alonso, explained that the six people, one more than in 2017, are starting  their experience in a hands-on workshop so they can acquire new skills under the guidance of Nuria Díaz (El Barquito de Papel and Calima Swimwear), Aurelia Gil, Carmen González (Gonzales), Cristina Sánchez (It Child) and Como La Trucha al Trucho. The experience will last until the beginning of August.

Those selected are students of the Higher Technical Diploma in Fashion Design and Modelling and were chosen for having the best academic qualifications. There are four students from the Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Gran Canaria and two from the IES La Minilla.

Alonso explained that the objective of these internships is to improve the students’ skills, since the experience will allow them to live day to day in a workshop and learn the production process of a garment, from the initial design and the preparation of the prototype to the pattern designing and assembly.

This initiative is very popular every year, not only due to the interest and the incentive that it gives rise to at the training centres, but also because of the continued support of the designers. In fact, some of the professionals from the textile sector have subsequently hired students who were lucky enough to take part in this project promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

Nuria Díaz

With original and fun designs, Nuria Díaz and her brand El Barquito de Papel offer children's swimwear collections with an age range of 1 to 14 years old. The garments are very good value for money.

Calima Swimwear is a firm for a young, daring and sophisticated woman.

Aurelia Gil

With a B.A. degree in Fine Arts, specialising in fashion, Aurelia Gil heads a women's prêt-à-porter brand that combines her creative universe with her artistic education, designing collections full of illustrations, textures and colour, which focus on the female figure.

Carmen González

Carmen González is the creator of Gonzales, a lingerie firm characterised by its highly sensual content and its handmade finishes, making her an ambassador of elegance and eroticism.

Cristina Sánchez

With the motto `Just for It Child´, the It Child brand is committed to excellence in the quality of the raw materials it uses and the excellent finish of its garments. Each year the brand presents three collections: prêt-à-porter, swimwear and garments for special occasions.

Como La Trucha al Trucho

The firm was created by Amanda Gutiérrez and Adonais Sarmiento in September 2014. They present prêt-á-porter collections for women, as well as men's and women's swimwear.

Palmas

Palmas, one of the firms responsible for founding Gran Canaria Moda Cálida, was set up by Pedro Palmas in 1989. It covers prêt-à-porter for women, swimwear for men and women, as well as garments for special occasions.

The Cabildo would like to thank these firms for opening their workshops to new talent and, in this way, making an essential contribution to ensuring the survival and expansion of the fashion sector of Gran Canaria.
