Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida has closed its 2021 edition this weekend under the co-organisation of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and Ifema Madrid for the third consecutive year. During the three days of fashion shows, the event received 5,250 visitors, a figure higher than last year's capacity, but always within the safety measures established by the health authorities. This year's calendar of fashion shows included 38 designers and brands. Of these, 17 are from the Canary Islands (2 of them children's fashion), 10 national, 6 international and 5 children's swimwear brands.

Among the novelties of this year's edition, the incorporation of outstanding international firms has stood out as a response to the objective of internationalisation of the catwalk, with names in capital letters from the world of swimwear fashion. The professionalisation of the event has also been intensively worked on with a reverse trade mission programme through ICEX.

Sustainability has once again been key in this edition of the Canarian catwalk, where the production processes respectful with the planet have been reflected in most of the proposals for the summer of 2022 presented on the catwalk.

GCSW by MC Awards

Vevas was the winner of the Best Emerging Collection Award for its collection "Can", an award sponsored by ISEM Fashion Business School, supporting the business training of young creators. On the other hand, for her special attention to the use of sustainable fabrics and manufacturing processes that respect people and the planet, the designer Elena Morales was awarded the Prize for the Best Sustainable Collection, sponsored by the fabric firm Nylstar and the magazine Cyl Moda Íntima, for her collection "Bilitä". And the third award went to Gonzales, who won the L'Óreal Award for Best Collection for the high quality of her proposals and for her mastery in creating her own universe with her Spring-Summer collection "Caravasar".

The international actor Kerem Bürsin boosts the positioning of the Canarian catwalk with his image.

Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida was visited by the international actor Kerem Bürsin, the perfect ambassador to project the image of Gran Canaria and the GCSW by MC catwalk to the world. The Turkish actor attended the fashion shows of Arcadio Domínguez, OYE Swimwear and Nuria González.

On Saturday, before the day's fashion shows, Kerem Bürsin visited some iconic spots on the island of Gran Canaria, such as the Dunes and the Maspalomas Lighthouse, Triana beach, Playa del Cura and Mogán, and did not hesitate to share these experiences with his digital community of more than 9.5 million followers, which has generated a great reach and impact among the Turkish actor's international audience.

New record for the digital call for proposals

The digital strategy continues to achieve record figures year after year. In this edition, during the week of the catwalk, nearly 100,000 users accessed the official website of the event, generating more than 165,000 page views, with Friday being the day of greatest web activity. The number of users who visited the website in 2021 during the catwalk days (around 80,000) increased compared to the previous year (47,000), a figure that represents an increase of 66% between 2020 and 2021.

For its part, the responsive version of the website, optimised for this edition, has facilitated access to the public, with mobile phones becoming the main means of access to the website (92% of users). Seventy per cent of visitors to the website come from Spain, followed by Italy, and thirdly from Turkey (the effect of Kerem Bürsin's visit as ambassador).

Social networks, a fundamental tool in the development of this new digital strategy, have generated 25% of the total sessions on the website, with Instagram being the main network with almost 80% of the sessions' origin. In addition, this year the official account of Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida has been launched on Tik Tok.

Boosting the internationalisation and professionalisation of GCSW by MC

The increase in the number of international brands invited to the event responds to a firm commitment to the internationalisation of the Canarian catwalk, the number of brands that follow the event outside our borders is increasing every year. The presence of brands from different European markets maximises the international projection of Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida and reinforces its position as a European benchmark in swimwear. The new international firms present in this edition were Melissa Odabash (UK), Alexandra Miró (UK), Oyesimwear (Turkey), and Mama Maria (Holland), who join Miss Bikini Luxe (Italy) -already present in previous editions- have been fundamental to continue with the internationalization strategy of the catwalk.

With regard to the professionalization of Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida, this edition has counted, as it did in its previous edition, with a programme of national buyers of great quality and interest for the event. A new addition to this national programme was the incorporation of international buyers from Italy as part of a reverse mission organised with the collaboration of ICEX.

As a result of this close relationship with ICEX, Maredamare, the only professional swimwear fair held in Italy, was invited to the 25th edition of Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida. Given the importance of the event, the company Underbeach S.r.L., organizer of the Italian fairs Maredamare and Immagine Italia & Co., has decided to invite the firm Gonzales, winner of the L'Oréal award for the Best Collection of the 2021 edition to the next edition of the Immagine Italia & Co. fair, which will take place from 5 to 7 February at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. In addition, the winner Elena Morales as best sustainable collection will have the opportunity to exhibit her new swimwear collection during the Florentine Maredamare event to be held in July.

In the same way, in order to go beyond our borders and reach other audiences, the official media of the event was HOLA TV!, which came from Miami to do interviews and a very detailed coverage of everything that happened in the context of the catwalk, by the well-known presenter Lucía Riaño.

Great repercussion in the media

In addition, as on previous occasions, the catwalk has had the collaboration of TVE Canarias, which has presented its programme Cerca de Ti live during the days of Thursday and Friday by the presenter Roberto Herrera.

This year #GranCanariaSwimWeekbyMC has counted this year with well-known faces who have shared the experience in Gran Canaria with their respective digital communities, such as the model Aída Artiles or the tv host Josie. They were joined by influencers such as Priscila Betancort, Marta Ibrahim, Gema Betancor, Andoni Artiles, Estefanía Gorayev, Honey Dressing and Yaiza Mencía.

We Swim Together

On October 19th, on the occasion of Breast Cancer Day, Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida wanted to pay tribute in the form of a solidarity fashion show to all those women who suffer - or have suffered - from this disease by showing collections adapted to the physical consequences of the disease. Specialised firms and local, national and international swimwear brands took part in this fashion show, with Ana Locking as the godmother. The charity fashion show donated all the proceeds from the sale of 50% of the tickets to the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Canary Islands Association Against Breast and Gynaecological Cancer.

Swim Talks

Within the framework of Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida, the Asociación Creadores de Moda de España (ACME) organised several meetings on swimwear fashion with some of the most representative designers of this Swim Week and professionals from the fashion world, analysing the current situation and future of the sector, dealing with issues such as inclusion and sustainability.
